The Storm is Raging, and the Snow is Falling

The storm is raging, and the snow is falling,
But through the roaring wind the tolling bell
Breaks through sometimes —
It is an echo of a funeral.

This sepulchral sound upon the earth
Is the message to the dead, reproach to the living,
It is a faded flower on the coffin
That is not pleasing to the eye.

The sound brings terror to our hearts
And it proclaims to us
End of our brief torments on the earth,
But even more so, the first hour of the new...
